Shree Kukke Subrahmanya

1. It is a Hindu temple in Subrahmanya village of Kadaba taluk (formerly Sulya taluk) of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, India.  In this temple, Karthikeya is worshiped as Subrahmanya, the lord of all serpents.  The epics say that the divine serpent Vasuki and other serpents took refuge under Subrahmanya when they were threatened by Garuda.

Shri Subramanya Temple of kukke is known for Lord Kartikeya, in this grand temple Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, is worshiped as Subramanya Devta. The construction of Kukke Sri Subramanya Temple is believed to be around 5000 years old.

According to one belief, after killing the demon lords Taraka, Shurapadmasura and their followers in battle, Lord Shanmukha along with his brother Ganesha and others reached Mount Kumara. He was received by Indra and his followers. Indra was very happy and prayed to Kumara Swami to accept and marry his daughter Devasena, to which the Lord immediately agreed. The divine marriage took place on Margashira Shuddha Shashti at Kumara Parvata. Gods like Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and many other deities gathered for Shanmukha's marriage and coronation ceremony, for which water from several holy rivers was brought. From this water the Mahabhisheka fell down and formed a river, which was later called by the popular name Kumaradhara. The great Shiva devotee and serpent king Vasuki used to do penance for years in the Biladwara caves of Kukke Subrahmanya to avoid the attacks of Garuda. Following Lord Shiva's assurance, Shanmuka gave Vasuki a darshan and blessed him that he would remain his supreme devotee in this place forever. Therefore, the worship offered to Vasuki or Nagaraja is nothing but worship to Lord Subrahmanya.

This temple is situated on the bank of river Kumar Dhara. This temple is especially famous for Nag Dosha and Nag Puja. Apart from being a religious place, it is known for its exotic beauty, lake, mountains and blooming nature.
